Work Package 1
Integrated literature review of public engagement with renewable energy technologies
This work package aimed to critically assess the ways in which public engagement with RET have been conceived, managed and regulated in the UK and internationally. This focussed partly upon the impacts and limitations of the ‘NIMBY' concept, as applied to renewable technologies and other technologies, as well as upon other emerging discourses and methodologies for public engagement with technologies; and covered academic research, policy documents and grey literature. Specific tasks included:
- Review of planning and regulating mechanisms for renewable energy technologies. This task was led by Northumbria and Loughborough and included identification of points of public engagement during the development process of specific renewable technologies at specific scales and in different UK countries.
- Review of social science research and commentary on the concept of NIMBYism, led by Surrey University.
- Review of research and commentary on public attitudes towards, and acceptance of, RET. This task was led by Manchester University.
- Review of participatory-deliberative methods of public engagement, as applied to both energy and non-energy technologies. This task was led by Lancaster University.
