Thousands of people were inspired to share their passion for science, and the natural world around them, when they got hands-on with a range of dynamic activities at a fun, free, family event.

An estimated 2,000 people joined scientists from the University of Exeter’s Penryn Campus, in Cornwall for the exciting Science in the Square event, which took place in Falmouth on Friday, August 16.

Hundreds of children of all ages became scientists for the day when they packed into the marquee at Events Square, which featured six special ‘zones’ featuring skulls and feathers of all shapes and sizes, local marine life, and mini beasts and creepy crawlies.

Visitors were also able to enjoy a raft of hands-on activities, such as using microscopes, while younger visitors had their faces painted and took part in craft activities inspired by the natural world.

University of Exeter scientists also gave interactive mini-talks to packed audiences who were taken from the glaciers of Patagonia, across great oceans, through vast forests and back to the wildlife that lives in local gardens.

As well as sharing their enthusiasm for their research, the experts were on hand for budding scientists to challenge them with questions throughout the afternoon.

This was the second time that the University has held Science in the Square, following on from the huge success of its inaugural event last year.

Professor Stuart Bearhop, Director of Education in Biosciences at the University of Exeter described the event as a “great success”.

He said: “This fantastic event once again gave our scientists the ideal opportunity to share their knowledge, passion and expertise for science with the local community and holidaymakers alike.

“We were all determined to give people of all ages the chance to experience the wonders of science at first hand, and really explore the world around us in a fun, friendly and hands-on environment.

“Once again, we were overwhelmed by the number of people who came to the event and by the extremely positive response we had and I would like to thank everyone who helped make the event happen and all our visitors who came along to get involved.
