Promoting Sustainable Travel

Dr. Stewart Barr (project leader)
Dr. Stewart Barr is Senior Lecturer in Human Geography at the University of Exeter. His research interests focus on sustainable lifestyles, sustainable development policy and climate change. His previous research has explored the motivations and barriers for individuals to participate in a range of environmentally-responsible behaviors, such as recycling, energy saving, water conservation and ‘green’ consumption. Through a series of project funded by the ESRC, DEFRA and the British Academy, his research has explored the links between conceptual understandings of environmental behaviour and how practical changes can be made to encourage individuals to participate in sustainable lifestyle practices.

Dr. Barr is also co-director of the University’s MSc in Sustainable Development which is a leading postgraduate programme at the University, exploring the practical implementation of sustainability in the developed world.

Jan Prillwitz
Jan Prillwitz joined the Department of Geography at the University of Exeter as an Associate Research Fellow in January 2008. His main research interests are in Sustainable travel behaviour, mobility styles and non-motorized transport. Previously he has worked at the Helmholtz-Centre for Environmental Research - UFZ in Leipzig (Germany) in a PhD project focusing on interrelations between life course events and travel behaviour changes. He holds a diploma in transport eingineering from the University of Dresden with specialisation in transport planning and transportation ecology.
