Dean Meadows
PhD student

Professionally: I joined the R.A.F Regiment from school and could only manage 3 years of subordination but thoroughly enjoyed working with Rapier, a surface-to-air missile system as well as making some lifelong friendships.

In 1989 I started my own Limited Company which lasted for 10 years. More recently I have worked in various self-employed ITC based support roles and have acquired a methodical and disciplined approach to support and problem solving. Initially gaining experience in the voluntary and charity sectors from organisations with limited resources, to more recent contracts with major national companies including Airbus, the NHS, Orange and Network Rail. I have been required to train, support and manage at 1st, 2nd and 3rd line for both Technical and Customer focussed roles in Financial, Medical and Telecommunications environments providing support and training which has included Help Authorship for bespoke in-house mobile software through to supervising/managing technical/customer support for national migration projects. I feel that my strongest attribute as an ITC consultant was the ability to communicate clearly and concisely at all levels.

Personally: I am defined by what I am, which is a Father, a Partner, a student and a loyal friend, I’m old and getting older far too quickly.

Education: Very little until I was 38 when I managed to dedicate myself to a 2:1 honours degree (BSc Hons) in Pschology and Health Science at the University of the West Of England. I then attempted an MSc in Qualitative Methods in Psychology but ran out of patience and interest working as a visiting Lecturer for the U.W.E. – but still felt the urge for academic expansion in alternative disciplines.

My passions are spearfishing, surfing, kyaking, football and big hills, I was standing on the top of Mnt Kilamanjaro with my closest friend on 9/11 and won’t forget the day for many different reasons (not to mention a 12 foot Black Mamba). I also enjoy reading and have recently taken to writing short science fiction stories for my son’s (and my own) amusement.

I have had a brush with cancer but am now happily in my 5th year of remission and long may it continue – chemo sucks – literally?

Voluntary: I have been a crisis counsellor for district & national organisations and a trustee for a disadvantaged young persons charity, which I have found both enlightening and personally rewarding. I have also been a Manager for a boys football team which was neither and duly became my nemesis!

I managed to attain a merit in my full-time Msc in Interaction Design whilst working full-time at Orange and I am now extremely pleased and honored to be doing an MPhil/PhD regarding future spaces of haptic and social robotics with Dr Mark Paterson and Professor Paul Cloke from Human Geography, Exeter University, Dr Sriram Subramanian from Bristol University and Dr Rob Buckingham of OC Robotics.

Keep up to date with the progress of my work on my blog -
