Dr Jake Barnes
Research Associate

I am an engaged, interdisciplinary academic. I joined the University of Exeter in February 2017 as a Postdoctoral Research Associate after working as a Research Fellow within the Sussex Energy Group at SPRU – Science Policy Research Unit – at the University of Sussex. My undergraduate degree was in international relations at the University of the West of England whilst my Masters was in Energy and Sustainability.

My research combines ideas and approaches from innovation studies with policy and governance studies to investigate how progress towards low carbon energy systems and sustainability transitions more broadly can be achieved. My research interests include the politics and sociology of innovation and change at community through to city-regional scales. I have worked with local governments, community groups and social enterprises to reflect, learn and pursue societal transformations.

I am also a founding Director of Bristol Energy Network, a city-wide network for community-led approaches to the sustainable production and use of energy. In 2013 I coordinated and led the development of the Bristol Community Strategy for Energy. Through this work I have collaborated with the Centre for Sustainable Energy, Bristol University and Bristol City Council amongst others on projects to diversify and expand the amount of people participating in energy system change.
