Dr Richard Jones
Senior Lecturer in Physical Geography

We are greatly saddened by the loss of our friend and much loved colleague Richard Jones who passed away in February after a long illness.

As a senior lecturer in physical geography who specialised in paleo-environmental science, environmental pollution and natural archives (such as peat bogs, tree rings and lake sediments), Richard undertook research in the late glacial environments of North West Europe and, more recently, in South West China where he developed significant and lasting links with Chinese colleagues in Northern Yunnan and Sichuan.

His Exeter Geography colleagues, many former students and far-flung collaborators will remember him as a genuinely enlivening and inspirational colleague and pedagogue, whether in the classroom, the laboratory or during the many undergraduate fieldtrips he led both in the UK and abroad. Richard brought real joy and enthusiasm to teaching and to academic life, at Exeter. His humour, affection and his refreshing ‘can-do’ approach have been invaluable. We will miss him enormously.
