Overview
With an academic background in Physical Geography and Environmental Science, I have spent the past 25 years in the fields of nature conservation, environmental sustainability and community development. During this career I have worked for a number of organisations both in the UK and New Zealand, including Devon Wildlife Trust, Groundwork, Forum for the Future, and Living Streets Aotearoa. I have also held a number of DEFRA Non-Executive Director appointments on bodies including The National Forest Company and the South Downs National Park Authority.
All of these roles have been situated at the challenging but exciting interface of people and nature - everything from working with individuals and communities to safeguard and enhance the wildlife and green spaces on their doorstep, to supporting farmers to play their part in rebuilding habitats and ecosystems. There has been a systematic thread throughout the many strands and forms of this work: exploring, interpreting and supporting how people experience, connect with, value and perceive the natural world.
My current PhD research is enabling me to further explore human relationships with nature. Sponsored by the Whitley Wildlife Conservation Trust, I am investigating the role of wildlife attractions in supporting environmentally responsible behaviours.
Outside of my research study I am keen naturalist, and spend as much time as possible walking and cycling in nature, along with swimming in the sea (summer only!).
Broad research interests:
Nature conservation; human-animal interactions; behaviour change for sustainability; nature and well-being; wildlife attractions; landscape restoration; ecosystem services.
