Overview

I am a marine biogeochemist studying the variability of the marine carbon cycle through observations and numerical techniques. I am a member of the observational group at Exeter that specialises in making and interpreting oceanic measurements of carbon cycle parameters at high accuracy and precision. My core research aims to understand the biogeochemical drivers of the changes observed in the marine environment, both the exchange of CO2 with the atmosphere through the sea surface, and the transport and storage of carbon in the ocean interior.

I am the lead of the Atlantic section in the Surface Ocean CO2 Atlas (www.socat.info).

I have a leading role in the European Research Infrastructure 'Integrated Carbon Observation System' (ICOS, www.icos-ri.eu), as committee member in both the Ocean Thematic Centre (OTC, www.icos-ri.eu/icos-central-facilities/icos-otc) supporting EU-wide marine observationalists in ICOS, and the UK ICOS committe (https://icos-uk.org/) representing all ICOS participants working in the UK on atmospheric, terrestrial, as well as the marine carbon observations.

Advancing European technological advancements in ocean research, I am on the Executive Board of the European 'Next Generation Multiplatform Ocean Observing Technologies for Research Infrastructures (GEORGE)', leading WorkPackage (WP) 4 'Integration and Interoperability', as well as intensily contributing to WP2 'Innovation in autonomous sensor and sampler technologies', to WP3 'Innovation on ocean platform technologies', to WP5 'Implementation and demonstration'.

Previous projects I worked in included the UK NERC funded Ocean Acidification Programme (www.oceanacidification.org.uk), RAGNARoCC (www.greenhouse-gases.org.uk/ragnarocc), and ABC fluxes (www.rapid.ac.uk/abc), and the EU funded projects IMCORP, CAVASSOO, and GREENCYCLES II (www.greencycles.org), CARBOCHANGE (carbochange.b.uib.no), INGOS (www.ingos-infrastructure.eu), GEOCARBON (www.geocarbon.net), FixO3 (www.fixo3.eu), and RINGO (www.icos-ri.eu/ringo).

Broad research specialisms:

  • Marine carbon cycle
  • Ocean and atmosphere observations
  • Marine biogeochemical cycles
  • Radiatively active gases
