Project Title: ‘Developing new methodologies and approaches to the spaces of human-robot interaction gap’

Project Description:
Given demographic shifts and the projected economics of healthcare provision within the next decades, potential client groups for domestic robots will include the elderly (for personal care and as mobility aids), those with mobility impairments, and children (daycare assistance). Within a broader social science perspective the research student will develop suitable ethnographic methods to look at the spaces of such human-robot interactions. The research will form part of a dialogue that could lead to design innovations, make user interactions more fluid and intuitive, and increase the acceptability of robots amongst non-traditional client groups within domestic spaces. Furthermore, the research findings will contribute to innovative work in the burgeoning field of human-robot interaction (HRI).
