Dr Lewis Winks
Postdoctoral researcher

I am an outdoor and environmental educator living and working in South Devon. I am passionate about the role of education in shaping and informing our relationship with the world around us – made ever more important by the shifting currents of uncertainty which surround us. I hold a deep view of sustainability which demands a reworking of our relationship with ourselves and a reconnection with the living earth; constituting a rewilding of ourselves. These principles have guided me to seek meaningful work with organisations working toward systemic social change, such as the Centre for Alternative Technology (CAT), where I worked in a number of roles: as a gardener; researcher and educator. I have also worked for the Field Studies Council at Slapton Ley, taking groups of students out to the woods, beaches and moors of south devon on field trips for their biology and geography studies. A number of entwined and interrelated factors lead me to take these interests into PhD study. I completed my thesis in early 2018. When not at my desk, I can be found leaping into rivers, hiking on Dartmoor or contemplating the vibrancy of life on the allotment. I remain committed to practical action, outdoor adventure and the importance of a restorative education through which we might fall back in love with this magnificent world.
