The Drawing Office is a Geography facility offering specialist services to support staff in their academic research publications, teaching and presentations. Our purpose is to ensure that our world-class research and teaching are presented to a high-quality professional standard, fit-for-purpose, and adheres to the University’s visual identity guidelines.
These services are open to all CLES academic staff, however, we do have to charge for materials where applicable (e.g. poster printing).

Our range of specialist services include:
Diagrams and Illustrations
- visualisation of data and ideas
Graphs
- wide range of graphing techniques from raw data or redraws from hard copies, designed to individual publication specifications
Preparation of images for ELE, PowerPoint and publication
- scanning, photographic image manipulation, page layout and formatting for final output to a professional standard
Cartography
- bespoke topographic and thematic maps - includes simple location to detailed topographic; catchment areas; spatial representation of populations; plotting of GPS or other data
GIS (Arc)
- data downloading, interactive digital map creation, final map production to publication standard
Graphic Design
- Posters - conference research posters, promotional display material - design and printing up to A0
- Exhibitions - design and production
- Leaflets/Flyers - includes design of glossy gatefold leaflets (we liaise with printers)
- Conference material - promotional posters, programmes, abstracts
- Typesetting/Desk Top Publishing - for short run reports/monographs
Map Collection and Specialist Resources (requests are facilitated through the Drawing Office)
- available to staff and postgraduates for research, fieldwork and teaching, and undergraduates for dissertation work
- includes maps, atlases, aerial photographs and sortie plots, Soil Survey Records, specialist equipment, theses, dissertations

Advice on basic cartographic design, design techniques and the use of specialised software, equipment and materials

- problems arising from different file formats, data from various sources, printing issues

- Poster printing up to A0 - high quality - please check for availability and compatible file formats
- Scanning up to A3 - high quality up to 1200dpi - includes material for ELE and PowerPoint (copyright permitting)
- Binding - comb and thermal
- Laminating - up to A3 (total encapsulation of item)
- Signage - corridor posters, noticeboards, office/door signs
- Display board loans - portable A1 boards that link together (please book early)
- Field trip preparation - maps, specialist materials/equipment, printing, collating and binding of handbooks
- Provision of specialist equipment for teaching - includes stereoscopes, aerial photos, planimeters, curvimeters
- Provision of specialist materials for teaching - includes tracing paper, graph papers, oversize paper
