During the study abroad year our students get to experience new cultures and activities.

Study abroad

If you take one of our Streatham Campus based four-year ‘Geography with European Study’ degrees you’ll spend your third year studying abroad at one of our partner European universities. More information can be found on the Streatham Undergraduate programme pages.

For students on all of our other Single Honours degree programmes, on both campuses, once you’re studying at the University of Exeter you’ll have the opportunity to apply to spend a year at an international university (outside Europe). This year abroad will be taken during the third year of study.

International Exchange within the BA or BSc Geography programme

The University of Exeter operates an International Exchange programme enabling students on our BA Geography, BSc Geography or BA/BSc Geography programmes to spend a year abroad in an English speaking international (non-European) university. Whilst abroad you will study approved modules at the host university to the value of 120 credits; these will be credited towards your University of Exeter Geography degree, which you would then complete after four years of study rather than three.

University of Exeter students registered on the aforementioned programmes can apply for a place to study with a number of International Exchange partner universities in the United States and Australia. You can find a complete list of International Exchange partner universities on the International Exeter website.

To qualify for application for an International Exchange place, we would expect you to have successfully completed your Year 1 studies with an average Year 1 mark of at least 60 per cent. Places are limited and will be awarded on competitive basis. You would pay no fees to your host university during your year abroad. For further information about fees during a study abroad year please visit our money matters webpages for  2012 entry students. All assessments during the year abroad would be undertaken at the host university and would count towards your final degree. Upon return to the University of Exeter, you would then complete your degree in a fourth year (equivalent to the current Year 3 of our Geography programmes).
