Overview

I am a post-doctoral research fellow in human geography at Exeter University. I am currently working on the Healthy Adaptations project, which examines the health and wellbeing impacts of flood risk adaptations.

Broadly, my research interests are in the dynamic and evolving ways that nature matters to people and increasing the visibility of diverse stakeholder values in just and sustainable futures. I use empirical research to advance theoretical understanding of social-ecological systems. I take an interdisciplinary and mixed-method approach in my research, drawing on literature and theory from economics, sociology and human geography and using quantitative and qualitative research methods.

In the past, my research focus has primarily been on small-scale fisheries. I worked in Myanmar as a consultant for international NGOs on projects around fisheries governance and livelihoods. My PhD explored fine scale temporal dynamics in how people interact with and benefit from coastal ecosystems. Specifically, using the case study of Atauro Island in Timor-Leste, I looked at how seasonal weather conditions influence small-scale fisheries and their importance in coastal communities at different times of the year.
